Help for Honey.... a near crippled filly with a crooked left leg
A little over 3 months ago I brought this underweight, scruffy, crooked legged dun filly home from an auction in my mini van. My 14yr. old daughter begged me to let her buy Honey with her babysitting money that was brought along only for tack. I said No several times because I knew her legs looked wrong. When she went through the ring at barely 3mths of age looking that rough no one was wanting to bid on her. My daughter looked at me and begged me with tears in her eyes because she knew the little filly would end up in the kill pen if we didnt take her. I finally told her that if she had enough money of her own then she could bid. My daughter had $45 with her and to my surprise the filly sold for $40.... to us!! lol So we went back the next morning and brought her home in my van and nursed her to good health with top quality feed, TLC and a nice comfortable area in our back pickett fenced play area for the kids. I had a vet out to consult about the legs and he said that a split or casts wouldnt work in her case so we should give it a couple more months to see if they straighten on their own and if they didnt she would need surgery. Since then the right leg has straightened out and her left leg is getting worse. I have consulted a couple different equine surgeons and sent them pics. The x-rays and exam to be sure the surgey will work is $300 and then the surgery will be around $1500. We were saving up for it but have now been told we have to move in the middle of winter and my husband is out of work due to back injury and surgery on his right hand. So unforunately we do not have the money to help Honey right now and she is limping now so time is crucial. I told my daughter we would have to give her up to a home that can afford her and she cried for days as she has grown quite attached. Then a friend directed me to the Wi horse page and there people suggested that I try to raise the money to help Honey so..... here we are. There is a chance that her knee might not be suitable for the surgery but I wont know with out x-ray and exam. Thanks to alot of great giving people we have already raised $160 and I am gonna get her to either Oconomowoc animal hospital or UW Madison equine center.
